Three cream-coloured glass shades on brass frame and stem, with red painted wooden ring above central body. Of particular rarity, this model was generally produced with a cheaper chrome frame and white glass shades. Possibly a prototype
England, circa 1930
The design appears to be based on the guard-ring insulators found on power lines, a sight that was to be embedded in the 1930s psyche by the spread of the 'pylon' throughout the British landscape. Referencing the new symbols of advancing technology, the glass shades and composition evoke the dynamic shapes and excitement of the power station, of the life changing possibilities brought about by electricity and its transformative qualities. Pylons were to bring electricity to the masses and the light's design talks to this new burgeoning market, as domestic designers looked to the aesthetics of industrial modernity for inspiration
